Roughly every six hours, the sea recedes, revealing a unique and fascinating habitat: the mudflats. Amidst the silt, sand and small watercourses, a world teeming with life unfolds – from lugworms to mussels. The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site and ranks among the most productive ecosystems on Earth. Important: Please never venture out there alone; only do so as part of a guided tour, as the tide and sudden changes in the weather can become very rapid and dangerous here.

Car-free yet easily accessible: Langeoog is rightly regarded as a true cycling island. With around 12 kilometres of cycle paths, you can explore the island at your own pace – whether along the main dyke, through the dunes or as far as the peaceful eastern end. Bicycles are available from several hire points in the island village, and electric bikes or child seats can be provided on request. This turns every ride into a little adventure.

A trip to the seal colonies is definitely one of the highlights of a stay on Langeoog. The excursions last up to three hours and take you out onto the water, where, with a bit of luck, you can spot seals sunbathing on the sandbanks. Some tours also feature ‘demonstration fishing’ on board – an experience that fascinates not only the youngest guests.

The surfing beach on the east side of the island is ideal for kitesurfing, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding: calm waters, steady winds and flat conditions – perfect for learning, too. Surf schools offer both private and group lessons: for beginners as well as for more experienced surfers looking to refine their technique. In the evening, there’s nothing better than rounding off the day’s adventures with some fresh prawns.

Golf with a difference: on Langeoog, you don’t just play around bunkers, but also around grazing sheep, which keep the green short in a completely natural way. Instead of driving, players cycle to the tee – in keeping with the island’s relaxed atmosphere. The harsh North Sea wind adds an extra challenge, making every round exciting.
