The island’s landmark is hard to miss: built in 1909, 18 metres high and visible even from the top of the dunes. The tower used to serve as a vital water reservoir for the island’s inhabitants; today it is open to visitors. The short climb up to the viewing platform is well worth it: on a clear day, the view stretches across the entire island village to the neighbouring islands of Baltrum and Spiekeroog – a truly enchanting panorama.

At an impressive 20 metres, the Melkhörn Dune is the highest natural elevation on Langeoog. It owes its name to the former dairy at the foot of the dune, where cows were still being milked until 1952. Today, the island’s youth hostel is located there. From the top, you can look out far across the salt marshes, the Wadden Sea and the North Sea: a wonderful view.

A peaceful, almost romantic spot in the middle of the dune landscape – the sort of place you wouldn’t expect to find at first glance. The paths are strewn with shells, and all around, beach grass sways in the wind. A stroll through the cemetery reveals a slice of the island’s recent history and invites you to pause for a moment – away from the hustle and bustle of the village, in complete tranquillity.

The coastal promenade runs right across the dunes, stretching between the village and the beach – with plenty of benches where you can take a breather. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll or stopping every now and then to enjoy the view of the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, this promenade is one of the island’s most beautiful walks and can be easily reached by the island railway.

The bronze statue of the famous singer, created in 2005 by the Langeoog goldsmith Eva Recker, depicts Lale Andersen standing beneath a lantern – a reference to her world-famous song ‘Lili Marleen’. It is a popular photo spot in the island village and a great opportunity to learn about the island’s musical history.

Ship models, ships in bottles and plenty of maritime history and stories: a museum that brings the island’s close connection to seafaring to life. A particular highlight: the museum’s historic lifeboat from 1944, which remained in service until 1980, can also be viewed from the inside at selected times. A brilliant thing to do when the weather isn’t on your side.
